Editorial

Dear GSLS members and friends,

The first half of 2011 was characterized by a number of significant incidents all over the world. +++ High youth unemployment provoked unexpected unrest in the Arab world. +++ Japan´s nuclear disaster after earthquakes and a tsunami entailed the nuclear power stations step-down in Germany. Japan´s need for international cooperation to reconstruct their research infrastructure will gain tremendeously in importance, and Germany´s new policy for novel energy sources will open up different research fields. +++ Germany experiences a new epidemiological situation with EHEC. The enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli bacteria of this deadliest outbreak was first spotted on cucumbers, then on lettice, on sprouts, in water, but it is obviously sprouts. +++ The German Defense Minister resigned in the wake of claims that he had plagiarized parts of his doctoral disseration. +++ However, he initiated the abandonment of conscription, and now the Bundeswehr is being converted into an exclusively professional army. +++ Last but not least some GSLS news in a nutshell. +++ In the above picture you see the newly elected Doctoral Students´ Council, congratulations! +++ The GSLS has renewed a number of forms e.g. for admission, thesis submission and report forms. Please exclusively use these new forms now. +++ And most important: the GSLS warmly invites you to the second GRADUATE SCHOOLS DAY on 21 July!

With kind regards,
Rose Liebert

The crystal structure of UvrBΔ4 (Bacillus caldotenax), a helicase involved in the damage recognition process of prokaryotic nucleotide excision repair (NER), is shown in green, the bound DNA is depicted as stick model, the black mesh represents the 2Fo‑Fc electron density map covering the DNA contoured at 1σ. The sequence and structure of the DNA substrate used for co-crystallization is shown above with F representing a fluorescein-adducted thymine which serves as a NER substrate.
