Information on applying for new "Research Focus Classes"

On 19 June 2019, the GSH General Assembly decided to reform the Class Structure at GSH: According to this, new "Research Focus Classes" can be set up alongside the four existing "Cross-Sectional Classes". The Committee encourages the establishment of new Classes.

The following guidelines apply when applying for the establishment of new classes:

  • The Extended Board decides on the establishment of new Classes;
  • the interdisciplinary potential must be visible when establishing new Classes, whereby "interdisciplinary" is to be understood in a broad and flexible sense;
  • at least three members are required to establish a new Class;
  • the members can also be members of one of the "Cross-Sectional Classes" (double or triple memberships are possible);
  • it must be foreseeable that there will be a sufficiently large number of doctoral candidates in the new Class;
  • Classes with fewer than ten members do not elect two, but only one spokesperson;
  • to prevent a Class inflation, inactive "Research Focus Classes" that no longer have any doctoral students can also be closed again.

The new "Digital Humanities " Class was also established as a pilot Class in this sense.
