Abstract:
The availability of large amounts of music data offers promising opportunities for musicological research. Quantitative analyses of extensive corpora allow a new perspective on the historical development of musical styles. Audio data (music recordings) are characterised by their universality (across styles and genres) and their good availability, but place special demands on the methods of analysis. Thanks to the further development of deep learning-based methods, great progress has been made in the field of audio-based music analysis in recent years. This work aims to utilise these advances and apply them to corpora of classical music recordings. To this end, strategies for corpus creation (taking into account historical sources for canonisation), analysis methodology and statistical evaluation will be discussed, tested and further developed. These strategies are to be used in various contexts, such as choral music, instrumental and orchestral music and the development of art song, and thus make the possibilities of computational humanities available for the acquisition of musicological knowledge.
