Abstract:
Augustine's last and unfinished work Contra Iulianum opus imperfectum is a reaction to the attacks by Bishop Julian of Aeclanum. Julian accuses Augustine, who had already railed against his theses in previous works, of inaccurate citation. As a result, Augustine quotes the opposing work Ad Florum in its entirety, but interrupts the text after individual sections and gives an answer to the preceding opposing theses in the form of a pseudo-dialogue. The argumentative context of Ad Florum is thus cancelled out and is difficult for the reader to follow due to Augustine's often quite detailed interjections. The content of the work, which can be located in the period of the Pelagian controversy, centres on the topics of grace, original sin, freedom and desire. The dispute between the two theologians also contributed to the doctrine of original sin being incorporated into the dogma of the Catholic Church, albeit in a weakened form. The aim of the dissertation project is to produce a scholarly commentary on Ad Florum 1 with an edition of the Latin text (without Augustine's interjections).
