Abstract:
My doctoral project is an analysis that is specialised in media linguistics. This young discipline of linguistics represents an intersection between linguistics and media studies.
Many people today can no longer imagine a time without online media, without surfing Spiegel-Online every morning, without minute-by-minute news updates via RSS feed or Twitter. The saying "Nothing is as old as yesterday's newspaper" must now read: "Nothing is as old as yesterday's online news". The aim of my work is to find out how and where print media are changing due to the influence of online media. Primarily the linguistic changes will be analysed, but economic and sociological aspects cannot be ignored.
There has not yet been any work on the effects of online media on print media. There are studies on the developments in online and print media, but none that draw conclusions from one medium to the other. In the extremely rapidly developing field of online media, there is a particular lack of up-to-date studies. There is also a research gap in the area of quantitative research: there has not yet been a scientific study based on empirical data that provides information on the influence of the new media with regard to language use. My work aims to remedy these research deficits. It should not only empirically depict reality, but also provide newspapers and magazines with useful insights into future developments. Qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis will be combined in order to find out how Internet use affects the print media. The following were chosen as the corpus: the local daily newspaper Mainpost, the national daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the weekly magazine Spiegel.
