Abstract:
Patrice Lumumba (1925 - 1961), the first Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of Congo, was killed by Katangese soldiers in 1961 because Belgium feared a loss of power in the former colony. Belgium's involvement in this politically motivated murder was concealed until 1999, which is why there was no official investigation into the death for a long time. Lumumba was mainly remembered in cultural discourses. The completed doctoral thesis offers a well-founded literary analysis of the literary representation of Patrice Lumumba in francophone Belgian drama and in Congolese poetry in French. The work attempts to update and reposition postcolonial literary theory.
