Abstract:
My dissertation project is about asymmetrical and thematically focussed conversations in an institutional context between L2 speakers and L1 speakers in the form of consultation hour conversations between Chinese students and German teachers. The communication between the two parties often ends unsatisfactorily. It can be hypothesised that it is not only the lack of language skills or intercultural differences that pose problems, but that - as with other types of conversations with non-explicitly addressed conflicts that have already been investigated - it is a matter of communicative and argumentative linguistic difficulties. Whether this is the case and how exactly this is the case will be revealed by an empirical study analysing conversations.

The focus is therefore on analysing this real-world problem. Important research questions are: Which supra-individual anomalies can be identified? Can they be described as disorders? If so, on which levels (e.g. lexis, argumentation, dialogue sequences, etc.) are they located? Can linguistic structures be uncovered in the systematising and comparative evaluation of many conversations that indicate general or prototypical disruptions in conversations between L2 speakers and L1 speakers? What can be recommended in terms of applied linguistics and the search for real world solutions against the background of professional analysis and how can we contribute to improving the situation (e.g. with guidelines or training programmes)?
