Abstract: In recent decades,
emotions have become a leading topic in philosophy, which has revised fundamental insights in our understanding of ourselves. However, despite an almost unmanageable wealth of publications, the social dimension of emotions has so far received little attention. This work aims to counteract this desideratum. The key question here is what it means when several people share an emotion. Reference is made here to the ontological, intellectual-theoretical and normative requirements that the concept of shared emotionality places on the actors. Theoretically, it builds on a debate that operates under the emblem of collective intentionality and in which the constitutive characteristics for the emergence of sociality are thematised.
The aim of this work is twofold. On the one hand, the linking of emotionality to theories of collective intentionality should serve as a heuristic to explore the possibilities and limitations of these approaches, and on the other hand, the function of emotions for interpersonal coordination and the formation of group identities should be examined. The latter points in particular promise to decisively deepen our insights into the normativity of emotions. Methodologically, this work will focus on analysing concepts. This means that the work is also of great interest for social science or psychological investigations into the dynamics of social processes.
