Abstract:
The subject of the dissertation project is the diagrams in Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius' (ca. 480-525/526) writing De institutione musica, based on its manuscript transmission, which begins in the 9th century. While the text of this treatise has been researched by various disciplines - primarily musicology, but more recently works on the history of philosophy have also been published - the collection of diagrams has not yet been analysed in detail and its specific manifestations have not yet been examined. The latter in particular is the aim of this dissertation.
For some time now, an increasing academic interest in the study of diagrams has been observed, based on media philosophy. Therefore, theoretical perspectives of current diagrammatic research are integrated into the work. Furthermore, the functions, typology and palaeography of diagrams are examined, as well as the relationship between forms of realisation and graphically realised content. As evidence of the temporal and spatial transfer of knowledge, diagrams also offer insights into cultural practices of reception processes under the specific conditions of handwriting. Questions from this area thus form a further perspective of the dissertation project.
