Abstract:
Economic and political causes of the Congolese civil wars and proposals for a lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

In peace research, there is a polarisation when it comes to the causes of civil wars in sub-Saharan Africa. While some focus on the economy, other authors recognise the political rhetoric as the root cause of armed conflicts in this region. This work takes both positions seriously and attempts to represent a middle ground. Firstly, the positions of the representatives of the economic reasons are critically presented and then supplemented by those of the political scientists. This expresses the fact that every war needs financing in order to be carried out. Nevertheless, the power of economics to explain the emergence and duration of civil wars is limited. The political rhetoric and the associated state failures complement the weaknesses of the economic reasons. Finally, recommendations for political decision-makers are derived from this economic-political model to explain civil wars. In this way, the author hopes to make a contribution to peacemaking in the DRC.
