Information on the authorisation procedure

1. General Information on the Admission to the Graduate School:

You are doing your doctorate at our Graduate School

To enrol, those interested in a doctorate first need our admission form, which they can use to enrol at the Student Affairs Office.

2. Application for Admission to a Doctorate:

You can submit an application for admission to a doctorate at the GSH at any time. Admission is granted for the semester possible and initially for six semesters, with the possibility of an initial extension of one or two semesters.

3. Enrolment - Steps:

The doctoral programme "Humanities " is - in terms of enrolment - an admission-free programme; i.e. apart from admission from our side, you do not have to go through any further formal aptitude procedure. Further information.

Enrolment at the University of Würzburg takes place in two steps:

  • Before or after you have received your admission letter from us, you submit your enrolment application for the interdisciplinary doctoral study programme "Humanities " online at the Student Affairs Office; the page there will also tell you the further steps you need to take. Note that all new doctoral candidates at the JMU Würzburg are doctoral students at the same time.
  • With your admission to our doctorate, you can then complete your enrolment for a specific semester in a second step. To do this, you must apply at the Student Affairs Office by the date stated in our letter of admission.

4. Deadlines - please note the respective enrolment deadlines:

  • The dates for enrolment in our doctoral study programme "Humanities" are not the usual enrolment dates for undergraduate degree programmes, but dates based on the respective lecture period. Please note that the respective start of the lecture periods always varies slightly, so be sure to check the date that currently applies to you under "Deadlines and Dates" .
  • You can enrol for the respective semesters at the latest as follows:
    > Those still/already enrolled in a doctoral programme: In this case, enrolment in our doctoral programme is simply a change of degree programme; this is generally possible up to one month after the start of lectures, i.e. for a summer semester until around mid-May, for a winter semester until around mid-November; further information and application form from the Student Affairs Office.
    > External/not yet enrolled prospective doctoral candidates: Until the last week before the start of lectures, i.e. for a summer semester until around mid-April, for a winter semester until around mid-October.
  • If you have any questions or require further information, please contact our office.
