Brief information about your doctorate

Your admission: Initial Info on the Course of your Doctorate

1. Your Admission:

  • Initial information: Immediately after your admission, you will receive a welcome email from the office with helpful tips & tricks for starting your doctorate at GSH; please make sure you read this carefully.
  • Initial admission for six semesters: Once you have been admitted, you are initially admitted to the Graduate School for six semesters - the period in which you are to complete your curriculum as your first objective and in which you are enrolled as a doctoral student. You can use this to attend the qualification events for your curriculum for which enrolment is required, such as, in particular, advanced/major seminars and workshops for interdisciplinary and non-specialist qualifications organised by the GSH Office.
  • Extension(s) of admission: You must obtain an extension of admission from your doctoral committee in good time before the end of your six-semester initial admission period. There are two options for extending your admission:

    a) An initial general extension of admission can be granted for up to two semesters. There is a sample letter for this from your doctoral committee to the director (via the office, please do NOT write directly to the Director).
    Any further extension  can then be requested again from the Director (via the office, please do NOT write directly to the Director);

    b) an extension of up to six semesters per child due to raising children. Information on this.

  • If you have completed your first six doctoral semesters in our Graduate School and your curriculum, enrolment is no longer mandatory. You can continue to do your doctorate at the Graduate School, provided you remain admitted. You can also take your doctoral examination at the Graduate School in front of your Supervisory Committee without being enroled; you only need to be admitted to doctoral studies with us at the time of the oral examination.

2. Your Supervisory Meetings:

  • In our above-mentioned welcome letter and here in particular, we point out that you are obliged - also in your own interest - to hold regular supervisory meetings with all members of your Supervisory Committee in accordance with § 7 of the study regulations .
  • The first meeting must be held during the first semester of your doctorate and at least two more in the course of your doctorate; we recommend one meeting about haldf way through you doctorate and a further meeting towards the end, which should also serve in particular to prepare for the oral examination.
  • Please note that for the admission to the exam procedure, your must submit at least three interview transcripts signed by all participants. You can find the form here.
