Editorial

Hello and welcome to the first monthly GSLS newsletter! It has five major sections:

On the occasion of the GSLS newsletter kickoff we announce the GSLS Mascot Contest. All GSLS doctoral students are invited to participate! Objective: the GSLS mascot should symbolize the Life Sciences and Research in Würzburg. If you want to participate, please register for the contest at liebert@gsls.uni-wuerzburg.de. Then submit your draft / your creation by 10 August. The jury will comprise the DSC, GSLS board and staff. The winner will be honored with an iPod - and with utmost profound thanks. 1. Featured Paper
Under this heading the GSLS wants to present excellent first author publications by GSLS doctoral students and award them with a prize. You are invited to send in your publication dating back a maximum of three months from the submission deadline. Submission deadlines are every three months, starting 1 July. The DSC and the GSLS board decide on which paper(s) to feature. The awardees will receive a subsidy of 250 Euros for conference participation or external research stays!


2. Doctoral Students´ Affairs

People. The GSLS has currently 228 doctoral students; 36 of them have registered for the summer term 2009. GSLS doctoral students are being represented by the Doctoral Students´ Council. New DSC members have been elected in April; read more

PeopleMany new faces at the GSLS!

  • New Dean
    Caroline Kisker
    , Professor of Structural Biology, takes over from Markus Riederer, the founding Dean. The GSLS thanks Prof. Riederer for his pioneering work and welcomes Prof. Kisker! <link life_sciences news single artikel caroline-k-1 external link in new>Read more
  • New Section Speaker Biomedicine
    One of the two section speakers Biomedicine was newly elected at the last General Assembly. Heike Hermanns from the Rudolf-Virchow-Center replaces Caroline Kisker and joins Helga Stopper, Toxicology.
  • New Managing Director
    Gabriele Blum-Oehler
    will join the GSLS on 15 July, coming from the Management of the EU-NoE Europathogenomics at the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology. Read more in the July newsletter.
  • New members
    The GSLS welcomes the following principal investigators as new members: Manfred Alsheimer (Zoologie I), Martin Eilers (Physiologische Chemie II), Carsten Hoffmann (Pharmakologie) and Leane Lehmann (Lebensmittelchemie).

Electronic display of dissertations
In order to increase the transparency of the graduation process, submitted GSLS dissertations are now made available to all GSLS principal investigators via electronic display.

  • New University Board
    Physicist Alfred Forchel will succeed Axel Haase as University President in fall. Read more.
    GSLS Vice Dean Martin Lohse is to become one of the new University Vice Presidents. Read more
  • New Provost
    Sociologist Enno Kruse is to become the new university provost - a decision still to be agreed on by the Bavarian Ministry of Science (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst). Read more
  • New Professors
    Jürgen Seibel
    was appointed professor for Organic Chemistry. Read more
    Markus Engstler
    took the Chair of Zoology I. Read More


Award.
For his research to develop a new molecular therapy procedure Thomas Thum has been awarded with the Wollheim prize. Read more

Europe

  • European Elections - United in Diversity. 500 Million Europeans from 27 countries with 23 languages will vote for their new European Parliament between 4 and 7 June 2009 (in Germany on 7 June). Read more
