2010 September - newsletter No 4

Editorial

Dear GSLS members and friends,

More than one hundred doctoral students and PIs came to celebrate the first Graduate Schools Graduation Ceremony and Welcome Party. The boat trip on the river Main with the graduation ceremony was the absolute highlight; log in for photos! Before this tour Professor Jürgen Tautz had given insight on "Good vibrations - `the comb-wide web´ of honeybees", and the GSLS office informed about the general program Life Sciences and MENTORING life sciences for female doctoral students. +++ The next social event is in October when a group of twenty doctoral students is leaving for the first GSLS study trip to Brussels. +++ Internationally oriented the GSLS again invites doctoral students form all over the world to apply for GSLS fellowships for spring 2011. +++ Twenty years ago doctoral students were released from their lonesome traditional dissertation phase. The new project Graduiertenkolleg (reseach training group) was launched to supporting doctoral students in getting more independent, and furthermore, it established what we call structured doctoral training. A success story!

With kind regards,
Rose Liebert
